Treating Food Poisoning without Drugs

Treating Food Poisoning without DrugsWhen you consume contaminated food, you are most likely to suffer from food poisoning. Contaminated food typically refers to eggs, meat or other dairy products, which contain harmful bacteria like E Coli. If you have food poisoning, you will be suffering from some really unpleasant symptoms, which include upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, fever, vomiting and chills. This is in direct contrast to a food allergy or intolerance, which is specific to some people because of lack of hormones or enzymes in the body and causes their immune system to refer to the substance or food negatively. For instance, an allergic reaction to something can cause you to have difficulty breathing or break out in hives.

Drugs are mostly useless against food poisoning, even if they are anti-diarrhea or anti-nausea drugs because this is a bacterial infection. However, there are some other things you can do for easing the symptoms that are associated with food poisoning such as:

  • Keep your body hydrated. Food poisoning will typically dehydrate you so you’ll feel worse. Avoid caffeine because it serves as a diuretic and will cause you to urinate more frequently; it is better to drink water or other clear liquids such as vegetable or chicken broth. The water content of the liquid depends on its clarity. Your aim is to replace the liquids you have lost because of vomiting or diarrhea.
  • It is highly likely that you don’t feel like eating, but that’s no reason to stop. It is important to keep your energy up. Crackers, dry toast or other dry foods should be eaten. It is easier to keep down bland foods so go for them. Fruit or spicy foods should be avoided because it is difficult to digest them when you are ill.
  • Eat some yogurt with live cultures or even take some probiotic supplements. Live microorganisms that benefit the body and treat or prevent the damage caused by harmful bacteria are called probiotics. Therefore, they are helpful in dealing with food poisoning. They are also known for their ability of preventing infections by giving the immune system a boost. They can be found in yogurt and also capsule and pill form. Yogurts that comprise of live cultures will usually mention it on the label and such information is also displayed on signs of frozen yogurt stores. Try to avoid yogurt that has a high sugar content because it will irritate your stomach even further.
  • Don’t be impatient. It takes a couple of days for the toxins to clear so you should refrain from strenuous exercise and get some rest when you are suffering from food poisoning.

If it is your child who is suffering from food poisoning or an elderly person, it is better to seek the assistance of a doctor immediately rather than opting for self-treatment. This is because they have weaker immune systems so the problem can worsen rather easily. If your own symptoms last for more than a few days, then also you will need medical assistance.
