Severe and painful headaches that tend to last for hours or even days are defined as migraines. They can cause immense throbbing in the head and also bring feelings of nausea. Sensitivity to sound and light is also prevalent in migraines. The problem is that there is no way that migraines can be prevented. However, it is possible to reduce their severity with some treatment or other.
Vomiting, nausea, pulsating or throbbing pain and pain on one or both side of the temples are the common symptoms associated with migraines. The location of the pain can vary; sometimes it is around your eye, the back of the head or even in the forehead. Auras are experienced by some people before they get migraines. These are flashing lights, blind spots or tingling in the leg or arms. Warning symptoms are typically experienced by at least 40 to 60% of the individuals before a migraine occurs, some of which include depression, drowsiness, irritability and fatigue.
The symptoms of a migraine are usually treated with pain relieving medicines. Mild migraines can be dealt with Motrin or Advil whereas the pain associated with moderate migraines can be relieved with over the counter medicines such as Exedrin Migraine. The most common treatment available for dealing with severe migraines include Triptan Drugs such as Zomig and Imitrex. The nausea, pain and light sensitivity that normally comes with migraines can be reduced with these medicines. If nausea is also a symptom of migraine, anti-nausea medication such as Pepto Bismol may be taken by individuals.
While migraines cannot be prevented with drugs, the frequency and severity of the headaches can be reduced with them. Lsoptin and other cardiovascular drugs can be used for preventing some aura and migraine symptoms. The length and severity of migraines can also be lessened with an anti-hypersensitive drug called Prinivil. There are some antidepressants that affect the serotonin levels in the brain such as Pamelor, which can prevent migraines. The frequency of migraines can be reduced with some anti-seizure drugs such as Topomax.
The pain of migraine can be eased or warded off with some self-care measures. Individuals should do things that allow them to relax such as taking a long and nice bath, listening to music or even reading a good and interesting book. It is also helpful to sleep for six to eight hours every day and exercise regularly as well. A diary should be maintained for keeping record of the occurrence of the headaches and the medicines that most help with the pain and other symptoms.
Using passionflower, peppermint and other herbs in teas has shown to be useful in relieving migraine pain. The pain threshold of the body is increased through an ingredient called capsaicin that’s found in cayenne pepper and this can lessen the pain in migraines. The frequency and severity of migraines can also be combated with aromatherapy scents such as rosemary, eucalyptus, ginger, lavender, basil and chamomile. Nonetheless, a doctor should be consulted before the herbs are taken.
