  • If you are suffering from a toothache because of an exposed root, you should avoid eating foods and drinking beverages with extreme cold and hot temperatures. Exposed roots tend to reach to temperature because they are no longer protected by enamel or gums and so this can trigger pain. They can also become irritated because of sour foods.
  • Semi-soft or soft foods should be eaten if the toothache is occurring because you have cracked a tooth. If you bite down on hard foods such as candies and nuts from the wrong angle, your tooth can fracture or break, which can lead to immense pain.
  • If you want to get immediate relief from the toothache, you can opt to apply an over-the-counter topical oral analgesic liquid or gel directly to the tooth that’s hurting and the surrounding gum.
  • You also have the option of choosing over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen or aspirin, which can give you extended relief from the toothache. However, it is best to avoid any additional complications by only taking the recommended dose and stick to the dosing schedule.
  • Good oral hygiene should also be maintained. Dental pain and other complications can be accelerated due to bacteria and foodstuffs that are left around and in the painful tooth. Brush, floss and rinse as per your usual routine, but keep a gentle hand around the area that’s affected.
  • Another option at your disposal is to chew on cloves or simply rub some clove oil on the tooth and also the surrounding gum. Not only will this reduce pain, but also help in preventing the further spreading of any infection because cloves act as an antiseptic.
  • Garlic should also be chewed thrice a day. While this may not give you fresh breath, it will kill the bacteria and also alleviate the pain. You can mix crushed garlic with peanut butter and Epsom salt and then press it against the tooth. The paste should be allowed to set for half an hour.
  • If you are looking for a better tasting home remedy for dealing with a toothache, you can find just the one in vanilla extract. A few drops on the painful area throughout the day should do the job for you.
